Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes of a senior photo session?
I thought this would be a fun topic to tell you, what goes on behind the scenes. There are things that I love doing that may not cross your mind. I get to be creative, and show off my passion through the pictures that you get in the end.
Morning: Preparing for the Session
I always wake way earlier than I planned because I am so excited. I start by getting a nice cup of coffee and planning how the day is going to go. Things that I review are my clients preferences. Along my journey with my clients I take notes of things they love and not love. For instance, I had a client once tell me that they don't like side profile pictures, and they love to dance.
I check my equipment and pack the night before the session. Before I leave, I double check and make sure that nothing is left behind. I also love to bring snacks and drinks ( that's the mom in me lol). Car is packed.
Lastly I look up creative ideas, I love using pinterest for posing, and prop ideas. Instagram also has a lot of photographers that I follow and I love seeing what they have created. This gives me so much inspiration. Get the juices flowing if you know what I mean.
Session Time: It’s Time to have Fun
I love getting to the location before the client. I need to scout the location again and find the best places for pictures and looking at the light. I use a flash, but I need to know where to place the flash to give the most to my client.
Client arrives 15 minutes before the session and we go over outfits again. We discuss what outfits to wear at each spot at the location.
While all this is happening I am getting to know my client better, talking to mom or whomever came with the senior. We are both getting relaxed and clearing up anything that may have come up since the last time we spoke.
Evening: Wrapping Up and Reflecting
I will discuss with the client the next steps. I let them know I will choose a great picture and add a sneak peek on social media for them to view and share with family and friends. This brings me so much joy. I also let them know how long it will take me to do a light edit, and let them know that they are going to fall in love with the pictures at their session premier.
Wow the session is done, and my mind is racing. I briefly looked at the pictures I took on my camera and I am absolutely blown away by how amazing they turned out. So on the drive home, I am calming down and reminiscing on how amazing the whole session was. Thinking about the smiles on my senior clients face and seeing the love in moms eyes.
Every senior photo session is different, the one thing that always remains the same is that I love the entire process. From the first moment we met on our zoom call, to choosing outfits together. Hearing about the surprises I gave them. Then seeing their bright cheery face before the session, making everyone laugh during the session to the hugs at the end when we say bye for now and we will see each other soon. Lastly the sneak peek and a light edit to end the day.
I am not like all photographers, I love every moment of what I do. This is not a job, it’s a passion that runs deep inside me, and I feel so much joy at every step.
If I sound like the senior photographer for you and your senior. Get in touch and we will be great friends.
